A Secret Service agent opened fire on a gunman near the Washington Monument on Monday, after the suspect fired at law enforcement, the agency reported.

According to Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn, plainclothes agents They saw the armed man around 3:30 p.m. near the White House and notified their uniformed colleagues.

The suspect He tried to flee when the officers approached him and opened fire, which caused the agents to respond with shots, published The Associated Press.

The man, whose identity has not yet been revealed, was taken to a local sanatorium. No information has been given regarding his condition.

Quinn noted that the Metropolitan Police in Washington, DC, is leading the investigation of the shooting involving a Secret Service agent.

Authorities recommended the population avoid the area while emergency teams responded to the incident, which occurred a short distance from the White House, where President Donald Trump was participating in an event for small businesses.

During the emergency, the White House was temporarily closed. The journalists who were outside were transferred to the press room, and the presidential event continued without interruptions.

The shooting occurred a little more than a week after an armed intrusion attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinnerin which an agent was injured, although not seriously thanks to his bulletproof vest.

Quinn indicated that it is not yet known whether Monday’s incident was directed at President Trump. “I’m not going to speculate about it. I don’t know if it was an attack on the president, but we’ll find out,” he stated.
