A federal grand jury in Washington presented this Tuesday an additional indictment against Cole Allen, the man accused of the attempted assassination of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, by charging him with a fourth count of assaulting a federal agent with a deadly weapon during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
The new accusation maintains that Allen allegedly “forcibly assaulted, resisted, hindered, intimidated and interfered” with an officer while he was performing official duties, also using a dangerous weapon, according to a court document issued by the district court of the US capital.
With this new charge, the defendant now accumulates four federal charges. He was previously facing a primary charge of attempted assassination of the president – which could lead to life in prison – as well as two accusations related to the use and transportation of firearms.
The incident at the Correspondents’ Dinner
Allen was arrested on April 25, after trying to enter armed a hotel in Washington where the traditional White House Correspondents’ Dinner was being held, an event attended by President Trump, first lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other high officials.
According to the investigation, the suspect had bypassed a security checkpoint and ran into the premises carrying a shotgun, a pistol and several knives.. In this context, it is indicated that he shot at an agent before being subdued by the security forces.
The new charge is part of a revised indictment presented to the grand jury, body in charge of determining whether there are sufficient elements to formally take a case to trial.
The case remains under judicial review in Washington, while Allen remains in custody awaiting further hearings. In parallel, Judge Zia Faruqui, in charge of the trial, recently drew attention to the conditions of the accused’s detention, after several days in isolation.
