Nick Reiner, son of director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner, appeared briefly in a Los Angeles court as part of his trial for the murder of his parents in December 2025. His trial was postponed to September 2026.
The 32-year-old spoke only to answer affirmatively to the question of whether he would waive the deadline to hold a preliminary hearing.
The judge set another preliminary hearing in the case against Nick Reiner for September, so that both parties can continue collecting evidence. The Prosecutor’s Office declared this Wednesday before the court that the autopsy reports of the victims are still missing and that almost two terabytes of evidentiary materials had not been delivered to the defense.
Nick Reiner faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents. Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead in their Los Angeles residence on December 14, 2025.
The couple’s bodies were found with wounds from a sharp weapon. Shortly after the bodies were found, Nick Reiner was arrested and named as the first suspect in the crime.
In February Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty to the charges. This came after the hearing was delayed after his criminal defense attorney, Alan Jackson, withdrew from the case.
It is well known that Reiner has long struggled with drug addiction and mental health issues.
The death of Rob and Michele Reiner caused a strong impact on the entertainment industry. Recently, Jake Reiner wrote an emotional text on the Substack platform where he described the “living nightmare” that his family is experiencing.
“Nothing can prepare you for what it feels like to lose both parents instantly at the same time. It’s too devastating to comprehend. I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream. This truly is my living nightmare,” the emotional text reads.
