Costco’s famous hot canine combo, considered one of the most iconic retail products in the United States, has presented an adjustment for the first time in decades. Although the price remains unchanged, some customers have already noticed a change in the way they can order this classic.
A combo that has been maintained since 1985
Since 1985, Costco has offered a package in its food courts that includes a quarter-pound beef hot canine accompanied by a 20-ounce fountain drink with replenish, all for $1.50.
This price has remained unchanged for 40 years, becoming a symbol of the brand.
The change detected by clients
According to The Self sustaining, recently, consumers reported on social networks that there is now a new option: replacing the soft drink with a water bottle 16.9 ounce Kirkland Signature brand.
The change was initially shared by a user in Virginia, but other customers in states like Nevada and California confirmed seeing the same option in their stores.
Until now, it has not been specified whether this alternative will be available in all branches in the country.
The price will remain the same
Despite this modification, Costco has made it clear that the price of the combo will not change. During a financial results call in 2024, CFO Gary Millerchip said:
“As inflation has stabilized, our members are returning to purchasing more discretionary items.”
He added: “Oh, and to clear up some recent speculation in the media, I also want to confirm that the $1.50 hot canine price is safe.”
A tradition protected by the company
The commitment to maintaining this price has been constant within the company. In 2018, former CEO Jim Sinegal joked about the issue when addressing his successor Craig Jelinek.
Jelinek recalled: “I went to Mr. Sinegal one time and I said, ‘Jim, we can’t sell this hot canine for a dollar and fifty. We’re losing a lot of money.’ And he said, ‘If you raise the damn hot canine, I kill you. Solve it.’”
