A deadly three-alarm building fire in Inwood early Monday left three victims dead and several injuredreported the police and firefighters.
The New York Fire Department (FDNY) said it responded to emergency calls for a fire in a six-story building. on Dyckman Street near Broadway in Inwood shortly after midnight.
Likewise, the New York Police Department (NYPD) noted that the building in question has residential and commercial use.
According to what the FDNY announced, 63 units responded to the scene, including 192 firefighters and non-public emergency medical personnel.. The department’s chief, John Esposito, stated that his officers encountered fire on the ground floor, which was quickly spreading up the stairs to the floors above.
“The first crew that arrived did so three minutes after the call and found several people trying to escape down the fire escapes,” explained the commissioner of the New York Fire Department, Lillian Bonsignore, in a press conference on Monday morning.
Authorities reported that three people lost their lives at the site. Two of them are women and the other is a man. The names of the victims have not yet been released, Gothamist reported.
Bonsignore called on residents to close their doors during building fires to help prevent the flames from spreading.
“In this building, the apartments that had their doors closed suffered very little impact, there was no fire,” he said. “The apartments that had their doors open suffered a greater impact, there were more fires.”
According to officials, one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation, five civilians were taken to the sanatorium in critical condition, two were transported with moderate injuries and two others were taken to the sanatorium with minor injuries.. Likewise, the incident left 30 people homeless in the building.

Firefighters continue to investigate the cause of the flames. They reported that the fire was controlled around 3:00 a.m. this Monday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a special warning due to the high risk of fire spread throughout the region from Monday morning until evening.
