WASHINGTON – The American president, Donald Trump joked this Friday about his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, and imitated his voice by reaffirming his position on the use of the name “Gulf of Mexico”a topic that has generated political and diplomatic debate between both countries.
“She (Sheinbaum) is a beautiful woman, she has a beautiful voice… she was a ballet dancer“Trump said during a private dinner of the Discussion board Club of the Palm Seashores, held this Friday in Florida.
“With your beautiful voice you told me ‘president, president, tell me you are not going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico’; oh yes I am going to do it, I responded,” the audience, made up of businessmen, officials and selected guests, laughed at the Republican’s comment.
Trump decided to return to the controversy over the name of the Gulf of Mexico that he reactivated in January 2025when US President Donald Trump publicly raised the possibility of referring to the area as the “Gulf of America” in official documents and communications in the United States.
The proposal generated immediate rejection from the Government of Mexico, headed by Sheinbaumwhich defended the historical name of the gulf and warned that it will not accept unilateral changes to its name in international forums or on official maps.
