The team of “The White Lotus”which is filming its fourth season in France with a plot set in the Cannes Competition, lived hectic days after the unexpected withdrawal of Helena Bonham Carter.
The actress had started working on the series when HBO Max He announced his departure with a direct message: “With filming on the fourth season of ‘The White Lotus’ having just begun, it became clear that the character Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter was not a good fit.” The statement added that this role “has been reconsidered, is being rewritten and a new actress will be sought in the coming weeks,” in addition to underlining that the platform and the director remain admirers of the performer and hope to collaborate in the future.
The situation left a significant void in a cast that had been carefully assembled. The answer came quickly thanks to the director and creator of the series, Mike Whitewho turned to one of his most frequent collaborators and a leading figure in the industry: Laura Dern.
The actress returns to familiar territory
For White and the platform, Dern represents a safe bet. His relationship with HBO Max was consolidated with productions that marked the recent small screen, including “Iluminada”, created together with the director himself, and “Gigantic Small Lies”, which is moving towards a third season with a cast full of figures such as Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley.
The actress even left a message in the second season of “The White Lotus” as the voice of the wife of the character played by Michael Imperioli.
As confirmed by “Diversity,” Dern will not take on the role originally intended for Bonham Carter. White designed a completely new character so that the actress could integrate organically into this stage of the series.which was born as a miniseries and ended up expanding thanks to the enthusiasm of the public and the recognition of critics.
A cast full of international figures
The new season has become one of the most ambitious of the production. Along with Dern, the series brings together prominent names in European and American cinema such as Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Chris Messina, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, Rosie Perez and Laura Smet. The mix of talents points to a season with a different tone, driven by a setting as cinematic as the festival itself.
While settling into this project, Laura Dern also has another relevant production on her hands with a miniseries based on the research of Julie Good ample. Brown about Jeffrey Epstein, collected in the book “Perversion of Justice”, where the actress plays the journalist.
