Actress Meryl Streep revealed that she was on the verge of not playing Miranda Priestly, her legendary character in the 2006 film “The Devil Wears Prada”. In an interview on the “Nowadays” program with the rest of the cast of the film’s sequel, which opens in theaters on April 30, Streep explained that she initially rejected the role to negotiate a much higher payment than what she was initially offered.

In the talk, Meryl Streep stated that when she read the script for “The Devil Wears Prada” she knew it would be a success and due to her extensive experience she felt in a position to negotiate a much higher payment, running the risk of losing the role if her request was rejected.

“I knew it was going to be a success. I read the script; skills were great. They called me, they made me an offer and I said: ‘No. I’m not going to do it'”said the actress in the interview, in which she was accompanied by other cast members such as Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

Streep explained that she foresaw the success of the film and wanted to be paid the amount corresponding to the success that the film was going to have. “I wanted to see if I could double my order, and right away they said, ‘Sure,’” he recalled.

Mery Streep noted that she did not mind the possibility of not getting the role since she was about to retire from acting at the time, when she was 56 years old.

“I’m 56 years old; it took me all this time to understand that I could do it! I was sure. I was sure it would be a success. And I felt like I was needed. And I wanted it, but if they didn’t want to do it, I didn’t care. Because I’m older; I am 56 years old and I was ready to retire.”

Although he planned to retire, the years after the release of “The Devil Wears Prada” were full of successes in his career. Her role as the ruthless editor of Runway magazine earned her an Oscar nomination and has been one of the most iconic roles of her career.

In 2012 she won an Oscar for her role in the film “The Iron Lady,” a biographical story about Margaret Thatcher, the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Now 76 years old and with 20 more years of experience since accepting the role in “The Devil Wears Prada,” Streep reprises the role of Miranda Priestly alongside the original cast of the hit 2006 film.

The film was directed by director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. The cast is completed by Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux, BJ Novak, Pauline Chalamet, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen and Conrad Ricamora.

“The Devil Wears Prada 2” will be released in theaters in the United States on May 1. In Latin America and the rest of the countries it will premiere on April 30.
