The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, accused Cuba this Tuesday of facilitating the presence of intelligence services of “the adversaries” of the United States 90 miles from its territory.and assured that the Administration of President Donald Trump will not tolerate it.
“We are not going to allow adversaries of the United States to operate intelligence or military bases 90 miles from us,” Rubio warned in an exclusive interview with the Fox Knowledge network.
Rubio’s statements are framed in Cuba’s historical relationship with rival powers of the United States, which dates back to the Cold War, when the island aligned itself with the then Soviet Union after the Cuban Revolution.
Linking Cuba with Russia
Since the end of the Soviet bloc in 1991, Cuba has maintained ties with Russia and in recent decades, it has also expanded its cooperation with China in economic and technological fields.
“Things can improve in Cuba with serious economic reforms, but not with the people who are currently in charge. They are economically incompetent,” The head of US diplomacy pointed out in reference to the presidency of Miguel Díaz-Canel.
Rubio’s statements were released the same day that the Senate rejected a Democratic proposal to limit the possible military operations that Trump could order in Havana.
Since January, the Trump Administration has intensified pressure on Havana with an oil blockade and the president has suggested on several occasions the need for a regime change on the island.
