Diego Lainez has not been called up by Mexico and may be left out for the 2026 World Cup, something that led him to compare his non-call by Javier Aguirre with buying cars.

“It’s a matter of taste, as with everything in life. You go to a dealership, there are Mercedes, BMWs and Audis. Maybe they are all very good, but you are going to stay for the one you like personally,” he said.

Lainez explained that for him to represent Mexico would be the most beautiful thing, although he also recognizes that Aguirre has many options and will choose the most convenient ones for the Mexican coach.

“I think I’ve already had some tournaments at a very good level. Obviously, for every player representing their National Team is the most beautiful thing that can happen to them. but I also understand that there are decisions that Javier (Aguirre) has to make and that he has many options. He is going to choose what he thinks best for his style of play; It is a matter of taste, like everything in life,” explained Lainez.

Diego Lainez, part of the Tigres UANL

Lainez has been an essential part of the Tigres UANL this past season. In Liga MX he scored 2 goals and 2 assists in 15 games and 2 assists in 7 Concachampions games.

Tigres is competing in both the Concacaf Champions Cup and the Liga MX Liguilla.

This Tuesday, the cats will play the second leg against Nashville and have a 1-0 advantage after the away victory in the first leg.

In the Liguilla, Tigres has just won 3-1 against Chivas de Guadalajara at home and seeks to seal its place in the semifinals this weekend.

Lainez highlights that the Tigers are used to being a candidate when the final stages approach regardless of the tournament.

“Due to the history of Tigres, and from what we have seen in recent years, every time the team reaches the final phases—whether in the League or in Concacaf—, he is always a candidate. We, with humility, are working hard,” he stated.
