The National Trust for Historic Preservation decided maintain this Monday his lawsuit against the controversial ballroom in the White House promoted by Donald Trump, despite pressure from the Justice Department to withdraw it following the attempted assassination of the president on Saturday.
The group’s attorney, Gregory Craig, responded to a letter sent by Deputy District Attorney Brett Shumate, who had urged desist from the action licensed and warned about the impact of the litigation.
Craig rejected that position and described as “incorrect and irresponsible” the opinion that the case represents a risk to the president’s security.
“The claim that this lawsuit puts the president’s life at serious risk is incorrect,” he stated in his communication, cited by the network CNBC. “Simply put, this case does not jeopardize the president’s security in any way,” he added.
The attack recorded on Saturday occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where An armed man stormed the event, prompting an emergency evacuation of Trump and other top officials.
A day later, the Department of Justice, through acting prosecutor Todd Blanche, called the lawsuit “frivolous” and warned of filing a new motion to dismiss if the case continued.
The licensed share of the Fund seeks temporarily halt the construction of the ballroom, by arguing that the project requires authorization from Congress under the Constitution and various federal regulations. In his letter, Craig insisted that this requirement has not been met and that the Executive could go to the Legislature to obtain it.
“What does not change is that the Constitution and multiple federal statutes require congressional approval for this type of construction, and that authorization does not exist”, held.
After Saturday’s attack, Trump asked to speed up the construction of the hall, which he has described as a high security structure necessary for presidential protection. In statements, he stated that the project responds to recommendations from security agencies such as the Secret Service.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated this Monday that The initiative is not a decorative project, but a measure linked to national security.
The proposed design contemplates a space of approximately 8,000 square meters within the presidential complex, with reinforced security features.
