Dagoberto Peña, former player for the Dominican Republic national team, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for child sexual exploitation and child pornography in Punta Gorda, Florida.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office reported that the Dominican received the sentence from the Bureau of Prisons on charges of sexual exploitation of minors and activities related to field topic that constitutes/contains child pornographywith lifelong supervision.

Peña had federal charges related to child pornography. The former basketball player pleaded guilty in January and was sentenced the last week of April.

Dagoberto Peña had been arrested in 2025

Peña was first arrested in April 2025 after being accused of committing sexual assault against a student.

The Dominican had been a teacher in a high school of Punta Gorda and basketball coach at Charlotte High College.

The sheriff’s office received a call from a mother after she discovered conversations between him and her son on the child’s phone.

The Punta Gorda Police Department investigated Peña’s phones and documents in which they discovered images, messages and videos related to him and multiple victims.

Peña was arrested again in July 2025 after being accused of sexual crimes involving a second victim.

Dagoberto Peña’s career with the Dominican Republic

Dagoberto Peña debuted in 2015 with the Dominican Republic national team and saw action in the 2017 FIBA ​​Americas Championship and the 2019 Basketball World Cup.

At the club level, Peña debuted in 2006, passing through several leagues, including the Venezuelan and Spanish leagues.

The Dominican forward also played in Argentina and Colombia. In Spain he played with clubs such as Barcelona Lassa B and Club Básquet Coruña.
