By J. Antonio Fernandez

We are deeply saddened by the tragic five-alarm fire in the Belmont section of the Bronx, which has claimed lives and left many others injured and displaced. I visited the site and witnessed firsthand the devastation this fire has caused. Families have lost everything and many now face unimaginable uncertainty.

The fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon, the 21st, in a five-story residential building on East 187th Avenue, quickly spreading through multiple levels. Two people lost their lives and at least 13 others were injured, including several firefighters who bravely responded to the emergency. Dozens of residents were forced to flee their homes, with more than 80 people, including children, now displaced and facing the loss of all their belongings.

On behalf of Catholic Charities of Unusual York, please know that everyone affected – including the victims, their families and the entire community – is in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. We also extend our deepest gratitude to the firefighters and first responders who risked their lives in extremely dangerous conditions.

Catholic Charities of New York is actively working to support those affected. Our teams are on the ground providing emergency assistance, including stunning support, trauma-informed counseling and direct aid – food, clothing, hygiene kits and other essential items – to individuals and families in need. We are also deeply grateful to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for opening its doors and offering help and shelter to those affected.

In times like these, we are reminded of the strength and resilience of our community. We stand ready to stand with our neighbors as they begin the healing and recovery process, providing emergency assistance now and supporting long-term recovery efforts as families rebuild their lives.

Please continue to keep them in your prayers.
