NATO is “working” with the United States to “understand the details” of the Department of Defense’s announcement to withdraw 5,000 US troops from their bases in Germany.a, a spokeswoman for the military alliance reported this Saturday.

“We are working with the United States to understand the details of their decision regarding military presence in Germany,” spokeswoman Allison Hart said in a social media message.

Hart also noted that “this adjustment highlights the need for Europe to continue investing more in defense and assume a greater share of responsibility for our common security.”adding that they are already “seeing progress” since the allies agreed to invest 5% of GDP at the NATO summit in The Hague last year.

“We remain confident in our ability to ensure our deterrence and defense as this shift towards a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO continues,” he assured.

The Pentagon reported the day before the withdrawal of some 5,000 troops from Germany in the next six to twelve monthsan announcement that was blueprinted after criticism from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about Washington’s alleged lack of an exit strategy in its conflict with Iran and the “humiliation” to which, in his opinion, the Tehran regime subjects the entire US.

For its part, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius responded that the fact that the US “withdraws troops from Europe and also from Germany” is foreseeableand agreed with the NATO spokesperson that “we, Europeans, must assume greater responsibility for our own security.”
