The New York Mets extended the contract of Venezuelan catcher Luis Torrens for two seasons.

Torrens’ contract is for two years and $11.5 million, with a payout of $5.75 million per year in 2027 and 2028, plus $2 million in bonuses.

The Venezuelan catcher, who turns 30 this Saturday, is in his ninth year in the Major Leagues and his third season with the New York team. Torrens was set to enter free agency at the end of this season.

Torrens has a .225 batting average with 92 hits, 8 home runs, forty eight runs batted in and 36 runs scored in 152 career games for the Mets.

Luis Torrens among the best defensive catchers in MLB

Torrens has been one of the best defensive catchers in the Majors in recent seasons, he was even a finalist for the Gold Glove in the 2025 season.

The Venezuelan catcher had a record of +11 Catching Runs due to his excellent ball handling and his outstanding ability to eliminate runners on the bases.

Since the start of the 2024 season, Torrens has eliminated 37 of 84 runners who attempted to steal gross.

Torrens has played 9 seasons for 4 teams, including the Mariners and the Mets. He has a .226 batting average, 258 hits, 27 home runs, 127 RBIs and 103 runs scored.

The Mets prefer to secure their backup catcher, despite having one of the highest payrolls in all of baseball and not having a good start in 2026.

If this trend continues throughout the season, the Mets could become sellers and trade players to lower their payroll in the middle of the season.
