An alleged note written by Jeffrey Epstein before his death has remained sealed in a federal court in New York since 2019, as revealed this Thursday by The Novel York Events, which formally requested its disclosure.
The document would have appeared weeks before the financier’s death, following an incident that occurred in July of that year, when Epstein was found unconscious in his Manhattan prison cell with a cloth around his neck.
According to the newspaperthe note was found by his then cellmate, Nicholas Tartaglione, inside a book. It was written on a yellow sheet of paper torn from a notepad.
According to the story attributed to Tartaglione, the text included the phrase “it is time to say goodbye.” The former inmate handed the document to his lawyers, and it was subsequently kept under judicial secrecy within his own criminal process.
A document missing from the official investigation
The existence of the note does not appear in the official reports on Epstein’s death, occurred in August 2019, when authorities concluded that it was a suicide.
Events maintains that The sealing of the document may have prevented investigators from reviewing it during the investigation into the financier’s death.accused of sex trafficking and child abuse.
When consulted by the newspaper, the Department of Justice assured that it had no record of the note. despite having gathered millions of pages related to the case in recent months.
The newspaper also indicated that has not been able to independently authenticate the content of the writing, although he points out that its veracity would have been evaluated by specialists.
Tartaglione denies attacking Epstein
The note became relevant after Epstein initially pointed out Tartaglione as responsible for the incident in which he was found injured in July 2019.
However, Tartaglione has repeatedly rejected that accusation and maintains that he kept the document because it could be key to his defense.
In 2023, the former police officer was sentenced to life in prison for a quadruple murder. He is currently seeking to reverse that ruling on appeal.
