The Uruguayan team set off the alarms 47 days before its debut in the 2026 World Cup. Giorgian De Arrascaeta fractured his right clavicle during the 1-1 draw between Flamengo and Estudiantes for the Copa Libertadores, and his recovery would leave him on the limit ahead of the World Cup.
This Thursday morning he already underwent surgery for the injury.
The injury occurred in the first half, when Ezequiel Piovi tried to take the ball from behind. The contact did not seem serious, but the midfielder fell with all his weight on his shoulder. Although he tried to continue on the court, the pain forced him to leave quickly and he was replaced by Jorge Carrascal.
After being removed with visible gestures of pain and avoiding moving the affected area, he was transferred to the Platense Medical Institute, where studies confirmed the worst scenario.
Fracture in the right clavicle
From the Brazilian club they reported: “After an imaging examination carried out at a local health center, a fracture in Arrascaeta’s right clavicle was confirmed. The player will return to Rio de Janeiro along with the rest of the delegation”.
The estimated recovery time ranges between six and twelve weeks, which puts his participation in the World Cup at serious risk. Marcelo Bielsa considers him a key piece in his cycle, in which he has three goals in 17 games, and his possible absence would be a significant blow for the team.
“The midfielder De Arrascaeta underwent, on the morning of this Thursday (30th), surgery to correct a fracture in the right clavicle (…). The procedure, which lasted approximately one hour, was successful and consisted of fixing the fracture with a plate and screws”they expressed from Flamengo in a statement.
And they added: “The athlete will remain under observation during the day and is scheduled to be discharged from the hospital on the morning of this Friday (1st).” With Uruguay’s debut scheduled for June 15 against Saudi Arabia, the deadlines are against: the margin is minimal and any setback could leave him out.
