The president Donald Trump praised King Charles III’s intervention before the US Congress and affirmed that it achieved what he never could: “make the Democrats stand up”.
“I couldn’t believe it, I’ve never been able to do that,” the Republican president told the British monarch during the state dinner at the White House, referring to the positive reception his speech before Congress received from both parties.
Trump had already praised Charles III’s intervention when he arrived at the White House and said that he felt “jealous” about the speech he had given.
The Republican briefly touched on the issue of war with Iran saying that: “We will never allow that adversary—Carlos agrees with me even more—to have a nuclear weapon.”
For its part, The monarch intervened at the dinner, paying tribute to Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for their “courage and firmness,” as well as to the Secret Service agents who responded during the attack that occurred at the correspondents’ dinner. from the White House last Saturday at the Hilton lodge.
Later, the king joked about various topics, saying that just as Trump said some time ago that if it weren’t for the United States, England would speak German, “if it weren’t for us, you would speak French,” a comment that was received with laughter from the guests, mostly members of the cabinet and businessmen.
Before, in his speech before Congress, The king stressed that both countries share “a history of reconciliation, renewal and an extraordinary partnership.”during a speech that is the first given by a British monarch since that of Elizabeth II in 1991.
