The Supreme Court this Wednesday invalidated the second congressional district with an African-American majority in Louisianaa ruling promoted by the court’s conservative majority, argues that the district’s design was excessively based on racial criteria, which contravenes the Constitution.

The ruling focuses on the makeup of the district represented by Democrat Cleo Fields. Chief Justice John Roberts described the boundary as a “snake” that runs more than 200 miles to connect towns in Shreveport, Alexandria, Lafayette and Baton Rouge, The Associated Press reported.

In this sense, Judge Samuel Alito, representing the six conservative justices, was forceful in writing the sentence by stating that the map constitutes alleged “unconstitutional electoral manipulation.”

What does the new resolution establish?

The resolution allows other states with Republican legislatures to revise their electoral districts, which could reduce the representation of black and Latino minorities who tend to vote Democratic.

The decision raises uncertainty about the validity of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, a key tool to combat racial discrimination at the polls.. According to expert Nicholas Stephanopoulos, about 70 of the 435 congressional districts currently depend on this dedicated protection.

Judge criticized the ruling and warns of serious consequences

Judge Elena Kagan, representing the liberal bloc, expressed her concern about the scope of this measure.

“The consequences are likely to be far-reaching and serious. Today’s decision virtually nullifies Section 2.”said Justice Kagan.

This ruling represents a reversal from an earlier decision in Alabama, where the court had allowed a majority-black second district. Currently, a third of Louisiana residents are African-American, a population that until now had a majority in two of the state’s six districts.

The resolution comes at a time of intense political activity, as President Donald Trump promotes redistricting to strengthen Republican options. It has not been confirmed whether time will allow Louisiana to draw a new map before the 2026 midterm elections.
