Colombian singer Shakira spoke out after the accident that caused the death of a person during the setting up of the stage for the free concert that the star will offer on Copacabana beach, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Through a statement released by her team on social networks, Shakira mourned the death of worker Gabriel de Jesús Firmino last Sunday, April 26, and expressed her solidarity with the victim’s family.
“My heart goes out to his family and loved ones. I am deeply saddened for the family, friends and colleagues of Gabriel de Jesus Firmino, a local worker who lost his life yesterday at the scene. “My heart goes out to his family and loved ones,” the singer said in a statement released by her team.
Firmino, 28, died after the impact of a stage assembly structure that collapsed, the Rio Military Police said in a statement Tuesday.
The fire department, which responded to the emergency call, noted that, according to other workers who were at the scene, Firmino suffered crushing in his lower extremities. When firefighters arrived, the man had already been freed from the structure and was taken by ambulance to a health center, but he did not survive his injuries.
The Rio Civil Police have opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
The Todo Mundo No Rio competition, promoted by the local government and in which Shakira’s free disguise is planned, commented on the tragic accident through an official statement.
“The emergency services provided initial attention at the scene of the accident, and the Fire Department was immediately called to transport the patient. Unfortunately, the professional died in the sanatorium,” said the competition’s statement. “At this time, we are providing all our support, comfort and solidarity to the responsible company, its team and the victim’s family,” he concluded.
After the accident, civil police inspected the concert stage and workers resumed setting up the stage shortly after.
Shakira’s concert is scheduled for May 2 and more than 2 million people are expected to attend this great event prepared by the city. The first event of this type was held in 2024 with a performance by the “Queen of Pop” Madonna. In 2025 it was the turn of Girl Gaga, who gathered between 2.1 and 2.5 million people. Shakira’s concert is expected to surpass previous attendance figures.
