The Philadelphia Phillies fired Rob Thomson after the team’s bad start with a record of 9 wins and 19 losses.
Thomson, who took over with the Phillies for the 2022 season, leaves as the supervisor with the best winning percentage (56.8%) since 1900.
During his five years as supervisor he left a record of 355 victories and 270 losses. In addition, they won two National League East Division pennants.
The former manager had joined the team as interim manager in 2022 after the Phillies had records of 22 and 29 with Joe Girardi.
He then led the team to a 65-46 record and reached the World Series that year against the Houston Astros. The Phillies ended up losing in six to Houston.
In addition, he won the Manager of the Year award three times and led the Phillies to the postseason in the previous four seasons. Before 2022, Philadelphia had 10 years without reaching the playoffs.
Don Mattingly to take over as Phillies interim manager
Don Mattingly has been named interim coach, Dusty Wathan has been promoted to bench coach and Anthony Contreras, coach of the Triple-A Lehigh Valley team, has been named third base coach.
Following this announcement, Mattingly will become, along with his son Preston Mattingly, the first father-son couple to be a supervisor and frequent supervisor. Preston is the regular manager of the Philadelphia organization.
Mattingly has not managed since the 2022 season with the Miami Marlins. This will be the third team he has managed after Miami and the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-2015).
