A man in Michigan celebrated his 66th birthday with an unexpected surprise: a lottery ticket he received as a gift ended up becoming a half a million dollar prize.

According to the Michigan Lottery, the Saginaw County resident scored $500,000 thanks to a scratch-off ticket his sister gave him during a family reunion.

A gift that changed your life

The man explained that his birthday coincided with an Easter celebration, which made the moment even more special.

“This year my family’s Easter party coincided with my birthday, so at the gathering my sister gave me a lottery ticket as a gift,” he said.

After receiving the ticket, he decided to check it shortly after.

“On the way home, I stopped at a store, scratched off the barcode and scanned the ticket. I got a message to file a claim at the lottery office, so when I got home I scratched the ticket to see how much he had won,” he said.

“I was very surprised and excited when I saw the $500,000 prize! I called my sister to tell her the news, and she was just as excited as I was,” she added.

Where was the ticket purchased?

The winning ticket, a $5 Money Run, was purchased by his sister at a Kroger store located on North Predominant Facet dual carriageway in the town of Frankenmuth.

What will you do with the money

The winner indicated that he plans to use the money wisely. He indicated that his intention is save the prize for retirement.
