NEW YORK – The US President Donald Trumpannounced this Saturday the cancellation of the trip of its negotiators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to Pakistanwhere they were expected to participate in a second round of indirect contacts with Iran.
In statements to the Fox network, the US president justified the decision alleging that the US maintains a position of strength in the conflictthat it is not necessary to make long diplomatic trips without guarantees of results, and that the Iranians can call the US whenever they want.
“I told my people a while ago, when they were preparing to leave: ‘No, they are not going to make an 18-hour flight to go there‘. We have all the cards. “They (the Iranians) can call us whenever they want, but you are not going to take any more 18-hour trips to sit down and talk about anything,” Trump told Fox.
Trump’s decision coincides with the departure from Islamabad of Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi.
As Pakistani diplomatic sources confirmed to EFE, Araqchí left the capital of Pakistan for Oman after a day of meetings with civil authorities and Pakistani military.
Araqchí, who had previously denied any intention to meet face to face with Washington’s envoys, He left the country without waiting for the arrival of the American delegationwhose departure was initially scheduled for today.
